While U.S. equities have underperformed other shares on a global basis, some sectors have held up better than others -- especially energy shares, which have actually outperformed their foreign peers.

Since September 12, 2003, the three worst performing U.S. groups (relative to their global counterparts) are Materials, Financials, and Utilities. The best performing sectors: Energy, Information Technology, and Telecom Services. [click on image to enlarge]
